Reasons Why Your Washing Machine Isn’t Starting or Agitating

Washing machines are essential appliances in any home, and they must work properly. If you notice your machine is experiencing issues starting or agitating, a deeper issue could be present. Understanding what could be causing your washer problems and the signs associated with each issue will allow you to make quick repairs so you can get back to doing laundry. Here are some reasons why your washing machine isn’t starting or agitating.

Worn-Out Drive Belt

A worn-out drive belt is one of the most common reasons a washing machine may not start or agitate. To identify a worn-out drive belt, pay attention to signs such as squeaking noises coming from the motor area or agitation that’s slow to start and stops abruptly during operation.

Disconnect all power sources by unplugging the unit and shutting off any valves connected to water lines in order to begin troubleshooting. Remove the back panel to access the inner workings of your washing machine. Inspect the rubberized drive belt located around two pulleys near your motor. If there are cracks along its surface or it appears frayed, it’s likely time to replace this part.

Broken Agitator

A broken agitator can also cause several issues with your washing machine, such as clothes not being washed thoroughly or the washer shaking violently during operation. This problem is most often due to wear and tear on plastic fins or something getting stuck inside them, resulting in an obstruction. If you notice any signs of damage, you’ll need to take apart your washer and remove the faulty component for inspection. Check for cracks along its surface, which could indicate where things may have gotten stuck. If necessary, use pliers or tweezers to gently pull out any debris within these areas before replacing the part with a new one specifically designed for your make and model.

Faulty Lid Switch

Another common cause of machines not starting or agitating is a faulty lid switch. This small device senses when the washer’s door has been shut and signals the motor to run. Your appliance won’t start if this part fails. To identify whether your washer’s lid switch is working correctly, try pressing down on its actuator button, which can be found near the handle or latch of the machine’s door. If you don’t hear anything or see any lights turn on, then this part needs replacing with a new one designed specifically for your appliance’s make and model.
